For 7th chords, there are four possible positions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Root position<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Root is in the bass.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1st inversion<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 3rd is in the bass.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2nd inversion<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 5th is in the bass.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>3rd inversion<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 7th is in the bass.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Inversions are incredibly useful for smoother chord transitions and creating bass movement within progressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drop 2 and Drop 3 Voicings<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In this PDF, you\u2019ll find two essential voicing strategies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Drop 3 voicings<\/strong>\u00a0(shown with G-root chords): These are derived by taking a close-position 7th chord (i.e. G-B-D-F#) and dropping the\u00a0<em>third highest<\/em>\u00a0note an octave lower (i.e. B-G-D-F#). Start by isolating one chord quality (e.g., Gmaj7 drop 3 voicings), and play through all the inversions to hear how the bass motion and inner voices change.
