Diatonic 7th chords are formed by stacking thirds on each degree of the scale, including the 7th note above the root of each chord. Below, in parenthesis, I wrote in how musicians will typically <em>say<\/em> the chord name when communicating. Often times, musicians will drop the &#8220;-th&#8221; and simply say something like &#8220;C Major 7.&#8221; Here\u2019s a breakdown of each chord, along with their corresponding Roman numerals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>I\u0394\u2077 (C\u0394\u2077) &#8211; C Major 7th<\/strong> (&#8220;C Major 7&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Root: C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notes: C, E, G, B<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is a major 7th chord. It serves as the tonic in the key of C.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>ii\u2077 (Dm\u2077) &#8211; D Minor 7th<\/strong> (&#8220;D Minor 7&#8221;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Root: D<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notes: D, F, A, C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A minor 7th chord built on the second degree of the C major scale. This chord has a soft, minor quality, with a slightly darker feel compared to major 7th chords.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <strong>iii\u2077 (Em\u2077) &#8211; E Minor 7th<\/strong> (&#8220;E Minor 7&#8221;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Root: E<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notes: E, G, B, D<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another minor 7th chord, this one on the third scale degree. It shares a similar feel to Dm\u2077 but is positioned to lead into the IV chord.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>4. <strong>IV\u0394\u2077 (F\u0394\u2077) &#8211; F Major 7th<\/strong> (&#8220;F Major 7&#8221;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Root: F<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notes: F, A, C, E<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The IV\u0394\u2077 chord brings a bright, open sound, similar to the I\u0394\u2077 but slightly more tense as it tends to push the progression forward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>5. <strong>V\u2077 (G\u2077) &#8211; G Dominant 7th<\/strong> (&#8220;G7&#8221;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Root: G<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notes: G, B, D, F<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The dominant 7th chord is crucial in most diatonic progressions because of its strong tension. It naturally resolves back to the tonic (I\u0394\u2077). The tritone between the 3rd and 7th of the G\u2077 chord (B and F) drives the need for resolution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>6. <strong>vi\u2077 (Am\u2077) &#8211; A Minor 7th<\/strong> (&#8220;A Minor 7&#8221;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Root: A<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notes: A, C, E, G<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This minor 7th chord, built on the sixth degree, has a lush, melancholic sound. It is often used as part of the ii\u2077-V\u2077-I\u0394\u2077 progression in jazz and is common in pop music as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>7. <strong>vii\u00f8\u2077 (B\u00f8\u2077) &#8211; B Half-Diminished 7th<\/strong> (&#8220;B Minor 7 Flat 5&#8221; or &#8220;B Half-Diminished&#8221;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Root: B<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notes: B, D, F, A<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The half-diminished 7th chord is the most dissonant of the diatonic 7th chords. It tends to lead back to the tonic or sometimes resolve to the V\u2077 chord, especially in minor keys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using Diatonic 7th Chords in Progressions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Diatonic 7th chords are useful in creating more harmonically rich progressions compared to basic triads. Here are a few common chord progressions in the key of C that use these 7th chords:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>I\u0394\u2077 &#8211; IV\u0394\u2077 &#8211; V\u2077<\/strong><br>(C\u0394\u2077 &#8211; F\u0394\u2077 &#8211; G\u2077)<br>This is a classic progression, used in countless songs.
