Both have their uses, and many guitarists use a combination of the two. This article is primarily about standard notation, what is commonly called &#8220;sheet music.&#8221; The exercises on my website will almost always use a combination of both. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standard Notation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard notation uses the same musical staff and note symbols as other instruments. Here&#8217;s a quick overview:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Staff<\/strong>: The set of five lines and four spaces on which notes are written.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clef<\/strong>: The treble clef is used for guitar notation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Notes<\/strong>: Represent the pitch and duration of sounds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Line and Space Notes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In standard notation, the lines and spaces on the staff represent different pitches.
